Stylistic features of Jugendstil

Towards the end of the 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement transformed into the Jugendstil movement. The name comes from the art and literature magazine “Die Jugend”, which was published in Munich from 1896 onwards. The magazine stood out for its idiosyncratic layout and contributed to the dialogue on beauty and art, as well as social issues.

Nature as a source of inspiration

Graceful, undulating lines of plants often form the basis for Art Nouveau designs. Take the tropical plant Alocasia, for example. This plant has enormous leaves that can even provide shade. The lamp inspired by this plant has a bronze-patinated floral growth form as its fixture. Beautiful! The graceful leaves in green with a hint of red reveal decorative veins. Exotic and highly artistic. Lamps with floral decorations create that typical Jugendstil feel.

Whiplash line

Wavy, asymmetrical lines, often inspired by plants and flowers, are characteristic of the Jugendstil style. The sweeping lines are reminiscent of the movement of a whip and convey a sense of movement and dynamism. Whiplash lines were widely used in ornaments, stained glass, furniture, jewellery and other decorative arts. Colloquially, this style is also referred to as spaghetti style.

Fan languages

Fan shapes were popular in Jugendstil. Fans were once used as a means of communication and were an instrument in the art of seduction. Ladies could use them to send discreet signals. The timeless motif looks modern and remains popular. The Tiffany shades in the Styled Flower series by Coloured by Art© resemble a budding flower, but are also reminiscent of the feathers of a peacock in full glory. There are also elegant glass shades in white opal glass.

Geometric Jugendstil

Another popular form of decoration consisted of geometric figures, sometimes in the shape of cubes or a series of cubes. All this was combined with the capricious and sweeping lines so characteristic of Jugendstil. The Sky Blue series fits perfectly within this style.
