The name Art Deco is an abbreviation of the name of the international exhibition "L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes" held in Paris in 1925, where the new formal language was shown to an international audience for the first time. The style originated in Paris after World War I, but has been adopted almost universally, both in most European countries and in the United States. The application of monumental geometric shapes, inspired by African folk art and a logical consequence of Geometric Art Nouveau, is one of the main characteristics of Art Deco.
